The Quarry (1998)
Member Rating:
Marion Hansel directed this Belgian-French-Dutch-Spanish drama, adapted from the novel by Damon Galgut, about an escaped criminal (John Lynch), who gets a lift from a minister (Serge-Henri Valcke). When the minister makes a sexual advance, the two skirmish -- leading to the minister's accidental death. After he buries the body at an inactive quarry, the escapee heads for the dead man's destination, where he easily assumes the ministerial position and is accepted by the community -- a situation threatened when small-time thieves realize he's an impostor. In addition to an award for Takashi Kako's music score, this film shared the top award at the 1998 Montreal Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

This moving was Boring, (yes, with a capital B!). Just the protagonist walking about, not very much dialoque in this flick so feel free to hit the fast forward, that's what I did after the first 30 or so minutes. No one seems to connect, and everyone, even the town seems very transitory. By that I mean, if everyone packed up and left, NO ONE WOULD NOTICE. The only reason I didn't put a "I hate this movie" is because the word 'hate' is just so harsh, and I thought the backdrop, the wide open desert space (kinda ghostly, like the characters) were good given the lack of dialoque...but I really really disliked this movie.
