Flowers in the Attic (1987)
Member Rating:
Based on the popular novel by V. C. Andrews, Flowers in the Attic centers on such chancy topics as incest and misguided religiosity. When their father is killed, teenagers Cathy (Kristy Swanson) and Chris (Jeb Stuart Adams), together with their preteen siblings Cory (Ben Ganger) and Carrie (Lindsay Parker), are put in the care of their religious-zealot grandmother (Louise Fletcher). Grandma has never approved of the wanton lifestyle of the kids' mother Corinne (Victoria Tennant), and she has no intention of extending her love to the children. Even worse, Corinne is anxious to win back the love of her estranged father, who, knowing that Corinne and her late husband were cousins and thus incestuously linked, would never approve of any children from this union. Thus, the four children are locked in their grandmother's attic, far from the view of their unforgiving grandfather. How the kids cope with their imprisonment is the heart of the film. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

flowers in the attic is a great story, but some of the things in this movie do not go along with the book. catey and chris's parents are not cousins. thier dad is thier mother's uncle. but also catey and chris's younger siblings cory and carrie are not preeteens, but around 6 to 8 years old. i loved this book, so i would if i were you. read book then watch the movie. it will make more of the film.

This has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The dialogue was horrible (and not true to the book in many instances), the acting was poor, except for Louise Fletcher (Grandmother), but she always plays her roles well, and so much of the book was left out! I know there's only so much that can be covered when making a movie from a book, but this was horrible. I've read V.C. Andrews books over and over and they are among the best I've ever read, yet this movie would ruin it for those who have not read the book(s). So if you have not yet read them, please do before you think of watching this film. They are SO much better than this piece of trash.

I don't get the great reviews here... key elements are "telegraphed" instead of dramatized and the script is far too timid dealing with the incest theme which is crucial to the plot - to the point that if you haven't read the book you wouldn't know it was there at all. The acting is just passable, grandma is a cartoon villian and the whole story seems under-cooked, but the main idea is spooky, I guess? Okay if you don't expect too much (but couldn't you say that about most any movie?)
