Though the original Fletch was drubbed by critics, it proved a major success for star Chevy Chase. It was inevitable, then, that a sequel would make an appearance. Surprisingly, Fletch Lives didn't come out until 1989--a full five years after the original. Once more, Chase stars as Irwin Maurice "Fletch" Fletcher, the gonzo investigative reporter created by novelist Gregory McDonald. Indulging his penchant for disguises and bizarre aliases, Fletch investigates a deep dark mystery at a crumbling Southern plantation. Various friends and enemies are portrayed con brio by Hal Holbrook, Cleavon Little, Juliane Phillips, Randall "Tex" Cobb, Richard Libertini and Richard Belzer (Chase's cohort from the old Groove Tube days). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Fletch Lives is a decent comedy based on it's own merits, but compared to the original movie, this is a steep decline in quality. Chevy Chase is still extremely funny as Fletch, but the story isn't quite as sharp this time around. Chevy has far less to work with, so his improv skills are not allowed to flourish naturally. Alot of the movie is forced and stale. Some parts are just painfully bad. But there are scenes and one liners that still make the movie watchable and funny. I've always enjoyed the Church scene when he cures the audience member of his headaches. Worth a look if your a Chevy fan. Plus Fletch is a Lakers fan, so that makes him awesome.

It's not as clever and a far lesser detective story, but is about as entertaining as the first film. They should have made a TV series.

Not sure if I agree that this isn't as good as the first one. The "scum, scum, scum" scene is awesome, and I think the best scene from either film. Great one-liners (as usual). I quote this film as much as the first one. Great stuff.
