"Can you fly the plane, I mean really fly the plane, Gant?" "Yeah, I can fly the Plane, I'm the best there is." The quote is a metaphor for the film. Of it's genre, that is spy/action thriller, this one's a keeper. Eastwood is a very believable reluctant vet and his supporting cast is amazing. It missed the full five stars from me only because I thought the Craig Thomas' novel was slightly underutilized from a character point of view(again, for the supporting cast - dmitri, notably). I really wished they made Firefox Down, the sequel written by Thomas. Action flight sequences are amazing. Pace of film is excellent.

This starts out a bit slow, but it is a good movie (and the special effects aren't *that* bad considering this was made back in 1982!) If you like Clint Eastwood or you like a movie that (at least historically) could have taken place, this is a good flick to watch.

Shows its age. I remember this movie as an action/thriller. Now, it's just a slooooooow snooze. Our teenagers begged us to turn this off after half an hour, it was so dull. Maybe if we'd watched until the end, it would have lived up to memory, but we couldn't make ourselves do it.
