Kurt & Courtney (1998)
Member Rating:
British documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield (Fetishes, Heidi Fleiss, Hollywood Madam) made this portrait of the late rock-star Kurt Cobain and his widow, musician and actress Courtney Love. Beginning with the 27-year-old Cobain's April 1994 suicide, Broomfield traces Cobain's Aberdeen, Washington, childhood and rise to fame, and the 1992 marriage of Cobain and Love, outlining the drug habits the two shared and exploring various "conspiracy" theories surrounding Cobain's death. Legal complications yanked this film both from a scheduled December 1997 BBC airing and a showing at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

This is a movie that films from a prospective that was trashed by the press and the police depatment alike in the mid 90's after Cobain's death, but presents remarkable evidence that will make you think again about Love's involvement in the events that took place at the very least. Perhaps an elaborate ghost theory, or an actual trail to a cynical truth, either way, anyone with the slightest fascination with the musician, his untilmely death, or his questionable relationship with Love would be pulled in by this documentary. There was some great footage you probably won't see anywhere else of Kurt and the ones those who were around him, providing what feels to be very candid, personal glimpses into their lives.

This film evolves to examine Cobains last days and those who claim he was murdered. There is no doubt that he killed himself and even the director agrees with it. The flim aims to find out who Coabin was and why he killed himself. The flim interviews those who knew Cobain personally and those who lie about knowing him. These people are fun to watch because they are all trainwrecks who's only claim to fame was that they met Kurt Cobain. The most interesting thing about the flim has nothing to do with Cobain but how the film was made and the directors struggle to complete the flim. I cried at the end of the flim because I realized just how human Cobain was and how much his suicide affected me back in 94 when I was 13. It brought up alot of feelings that I was not mature enough to deal with then. I reccommend it even if you are not a Nirvana fan.

Sorry to say, but I was somewhat disappointed in the movie...from the description of the film I felt like there woul be no doubt you would be able to get up from it and clearly feel that he commited suicide. I agree with the diretor that there are definitely some unanswered questions by the police as well as Courtney Love, but by the end of the movie it almost seems as though the director has changed his mind as well. Decent footage of some times in his life we may have never know to exist, but he was under such a thumb that I don't feel he was able to truly do this documentary the way he would have liked. Worth seeing, but definitely didn't convince me that there was foul play. I don't want to believe that he was ready to take his own life, but heroine is an evil drug and there is no telling what could have been going through his mind back then. Rent it and see what you think.
