Hostile Waters is a made for TV movie based on the book by Peter Huchthausen. The film is about a collision that occurred in 1986 off the coast of Bermuda between two Russian and American nuclear submarines. The United States government has always denied that their sub was involved in damaging the Soviet craft. This is a low budget picture so it is not fair to make comparisons to the movie K-19 The Widowmaker which retells another Soviet sub disaster that happened in 1961 and cost $100,000,000 to make. Rutger Hauer was excellent as the Soviet sub commander and this really was a movie about him. Martin Sheen as the American sub commander was in only a few brief but necessary scenes. I have no idea how accurate this movie was. Could a major fire in the missile bay launch the rockets or cause the reactor to melt down and would these incidents possibly kill millions of Americans? I can not answer those questions. HBO pictures usually are interesting and I enjoyed this one.

As a made for T.V. movie, it was really good. Rutger Hauer was excellent, and Martin Sheen is always good. It is based on an actual incident which I feel makes it even more interesting. Good for a watch.
