4 Little Girls (1997)

4 Little Girls (1997)
Member Rating:
Director Spike Lee made his first feature-length documentary with this powerful story of the bombing of an African-American church in Birmingham, AL, in 1963, which took the lives of four girls, ages 11 through 14. The shocking incident received national press attention and became a rallying point in the ongoing struggle for civil rights, but while Lee's film examines the crime, the perpetrators, and the long struggle to bring them to justice, it also offers a close look at the four girls themselves as their friends and families recall, in moving detail, who they were and how they lived. A variety of civil rights activists, politicians, journalists, and lawyers are interviewed onscreen, including Walter Cronkite and a brief but disturbing meeting with former Alabama governor George Wallace. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A sad chapter of American history, skillfully outlined by old news footage, photographs and interviews old and new. I was touched by the quiet dignity of the parents who lost their children, and the pain still present in family and friends. Well done, Spike Lee.

Spike did a fine job. Good to show in high school classes, being a former HS teacher many years ago. Pretty gritty and realistic without being preachy. Did a good job of just showing what happened during those turbulent period of our nation and it was a good reminder to me. Memories of such things are short and it is "good for the soul" to not forget such inhumainty to man. And we have progressed from where we were, all the time always room for improvement.

This is a film for all to see--we must never forget this incident or the many historical events the film references. To say I "enjoyed" the film would be inaccurate for it was very hard to watch and remember those times. However, I am thankful to Spike Lee for once again capturing hearts and souls in such a powerful, meaningful way.
