Fame (1980)

Fame (1980)
Member Rating:
Fame is set at New York's High School of Performing Arts, where talented teens train for show-business careers. The film concentrates on five of the most gifted students: singer Irene Cara, actors Paul McCrane and Barry Miller, dancer Gene Anthony Ray, and musician Lee Currieri. More so than the subsequent TV series Fame, the film emphasizes the importance of keeping up one's academic achievements in this specialized school. The faculty includes no-nonsense English teacher Ann Meara, erudite musical instructor Albert Hague, and martinet dance teacher Debbie Allen. Of the film's cast, Ray, Currieri, Allen and Hague were carried over to the TV version of Fame, which premiered in 1981. The score for the film version of Fame was honored with an Academy Award. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I thought this movie was great, but you have to be careful if you're going to watch this with young children. The site has this mis-labeled as a PG movie. The disc itself says it is rated R and the movie contains nudity, drugs, and swearing. This is a really great movie, just not for young kids.

In all seriousness this movie is great and other movies that try to depict any resemblance in the area of the Arts in this specific category pale in comparison. The actors are great in this movie and the story line is also great, they could have done without the small portion of nudity towards the end because it was not even necessary, they could have went a different route with that. And the ending could have also been a little more on target to what direction the main characters went after finishing school, because you will be left wondering, well......what happened to them? All in all a good movie to watch and the music is great. Irene Cara is wonderful and it is plain to see why her music got her the awards it did.

As a young teenager who saw the movie. I don't really remember all the swearing in the movie. Though, the movie still gave me the feel good feeling inside of me. Especially with the song "Body Electric". I wanted to share this movie with my 9 year old who seems to be expressing her interest in the arts. She enjoyed the final song. But I'm glad she didn't really watch the full movie with me. As I didn't remember the nudity or the language in it. Still a good movie to me!
