Boys will be boys and girls will be girls, but one child isn't so sure in this Belgian comedy drama. 7-year-old Ludovic (Georges DuFresne) is happy, healthy, and good-natured, but there's a bit of a problem -- he has decided that he's a girl. While his parents Hanna (Michele Laroque) and Pierre (Jean-Philippe Ecoffey) try to understand, Ludovic stubbornly refuses to listen to reason from his parents, teachers, or schoolmates. His fondness for wearing girl's clothes and frequent pronouncements to strangers that he's going to be a woman when he grows up become increasingly worrying, and things come to a head when Ludovic declares that when he's older, he plans to marry Jerome (Julien Riviere), the boy next door. It hardly helps that Pierre's boss, Albert (Daniel Hanssens), is also Jerome's father, and that he's notoriously closed-minded about gender issues. Will Pierre keep his job? Will the stress spoil Pierre and Hanna's marriage? And will Ludovic find the right shade of lipstick? Ma Vie En Rose was the first feature for director and screenwriter Alain Berliner. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a magical, albeit heart-breaking, fairytale about a sensitive and imaginative little boy named Ludovic, who believes that he was supposed to have been born a girl. He innocently believes that a mistake was made and that he will eventually become the girl he was meant to be. Unfortunately, he lives in a very Catholic bourgeois Suburb, where the hateful opposition to a 7 year old cross-dresser abounds. Even his own parents seem to resent his existence. Only his grand mother and his "fairy god mother," a barbie-doll-like television character named Pam seem willing to accept her for who she is. The fact that this film is "Rated-R" owes entirely to the homophobia of the MPAA. There is nothing in this film that warrants such a rating.

In my opinion as a transsexual woman, this film explains childhood transsexualism superbly, but it is also a wonderful film of its own right. The film is a bitter-sweet, heart-wrenching, empathetic story about a very lovable child who doesn't fit. It is brilliantly structured to carry the adult viewer into the perceptual world of a child, and it is perhaps because of this break in perspective that the viewer can also "step inside" the viewpoint of a transsexual. To a lesser extent, the movie is about the numerous dilemmas the parents face in the tradeoff between raising a happy child and bowing to the narrow-mindedness of an intolerant world. I strongly disagree with the R rating. The film is devoid of sex, violence, nudity, and strong language. Parents should be reassured that the film clearly teaches children the adverse consequences of being transsexual. Beware, though, because it does encourage tolerance for those born with this curse.

This was a great film...one never to be made in Hollywood. The main star (Georges DuFresne) did an absolutely superb acting job and deserves an oscar for the performance (I exaggerate not). If you like independent or foreign films this one is a must.
