This drama about an undercover cop who learns the hidden dangers of working his way inside the mob was based on a true story. Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) is an FBI agent who is given an assignment to infiltrate the Mafia; calling himself Donnie Brasco, he befriends Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), a low-level mob hit man whose personal life is in tatters. Lefty's marriage is falling apart, his son is a junkie, and his health is failing, which only adds to his growing disillusionment about having spent 30 years with the Mafia (and killing 26 people) with little to show for it. But in Donnie, Lefty sees someone who can succeed where he failed; he takes the young man under his wing, and under Lefty's tutelage Donnie quickly rises through the ranks of organized crime; however, the longer he plays the role of the gangster, the more Joe Pistone finds himself becoming Donnie Brasco in his increasingly rare off hours; it drives a wedge between himself and his wife (Anne Heche) and children, and Joe realizes that a break in character among the hoodlums he's come to know could mean a death sentence for himself and his family. Just as importantly, Joe has come to regard Lefty as a close and trusted friend, and Joe realizes that when the day comes where he has to turn in his Mob associates, he'll be ending Lefty's life as surely as if he put a slug in his head himself. The supporting cast includes Michael Madsen as Sonny, Lefty's boss, and Bruno Kirby as Nicky, one of Sonny's henchmen. The real-life Joe Pistone today lives under an assumed name with a 500,000-dollar contract on his life still in effect. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Not much is suprising in Donnie Brasco. We are told from the get go that Mr. Brasco is undercover but from that point to the end, as cliched as the movie may seem, it does so many things right that its a courageous lifestyle study. This movie is fantastic all around, because the focus is on the characters, whether it be within the mob or the family waiting at home. The Mob is less glorified here and the attention is soley on the personalities rather than the activities of the mob. Johnny Depp is wonderful in this movie; we witness a complete change and evolution in character in the two plus hours of the movie and that in itself is worth a viewing. Pacino does a sensational job in his reserved role as a bottom of the pole mobster still trying to earn his rank after 30 years. This is a great film propelled by superb acting and should be a must see for any mafia/mob movie fans.

This movie is excellent. It shows the pain the horrible stuff a low level employee even in the mob has to go through. This movie was well made and the actors really bring it home. Johnny Depp was magnificient and Al PAcino was very good as Lefty. Watch this movie and the firghtening turn by Depp as he slowly become a gangster is amazing. I am not sure how close this comes to the real story of the FBI agent it covers, but the movie was excellent.

one of the best mobb movies of all time in my opinion. It often gets over looked compared to such films as good fellas, casino, scar face, godfather etc, but it is right up there with greatest mob and gangster movies of all time. The chemistry between depp and pacino is amazing to watch on film. The film based on true events is told about as accurate as any film based on a true story that i have ever seen. A Classic film
