American Buffalo (1996)
Member Rating:
David Mamet's play about three losers planning a robbery is brought to the screen in an admirably simple, straightforward manner. Don (Dennis Franz) is the owner of an "antique store" (read: junk shop) who discovers that the buffalo head nickel he recently sold to a coin collector was a lot more valuable than he imagined. Don hatches a scheme in which he and Bobby (Sean Nelson), a teenage kid who works at the shop, will steal the nickel back and sell it for a much higher price. Teach (Dustin Hoffman), Don's down-on-his-luck buddy, insists on coming in on the job, but Don isn't sure he wants Teach's help -- or that the robbery is a good idea at all. While director Michael Corrente occasionally moves the action out of the shop (unlike the original play), American Buffalo maintains nearly all the dialogue of the original play and its three-man cast. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I usually do not write bad reviews but this was the worst movie yet. Dustin Hoffman is way too dramatic by shouting curse words non-stop and breaking things. It was painful to watch. I am a huge fan of Dennis Franz but even he could not make the movie bearable to watch. I cringed during the entire movie!

The artificiality of the dialogue; with lots of "dramatic" statements that ring like they were written by a playright rather than said by these characters, make this a boring film that fails to draw in the viewer. Hoffman gets to show off some, but it is not worth your time and money.

Such a waste of effort and talent. Mamet has some great screenplays, but this one got by on reputation. Dustin Hoffman is way over the top in a way that is hard to justify even by slavish Method devotees. It's 90 minutes that seems like 3 hours of torture. Move along to Glengarry Glen Ross or Spanish Prisoner.
