Bette Midler does a great job as the ultimate stage managing mother, and some of the musical scenes were a great variation to the original Gypsy movie. A couple were better, perhaps even, especially the "Gotta Have a Gimmick" scene.
However, I reccommend seeing the first (1962) Gypsy, as it sets the ultimate standard. Natalie Wood is by far the more endearing Gypsy, although Bette Midler may perhaps be the better mother than Rosalind Russel.
i have seen the broadway productions of gypsy starring ethel merman, tyne daly, and angela landsberry and beth out does them all not only in singing but also her acting.
