Into the Woods (1990)

Into the Woods (1990)
Member Rating:
Originally broadcast as part of the American Playhouse series on PBS, this video captures a performance by the original cast of the popular Broadway musical. With songs and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, who also directed the stage production, Into the Woods humorously combines a number of classic fairy tales into one over-arching narrative. A baker and his wife are assigned a number of tasks by a nearby witch; only after completing these duties will they be able to give birth. During their quest to fulfill the witches' demands, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and numerous other fairy tale figures. The traditional stories are parodied and altered at will, yet the original fairy tales' sense of wonder and, at times, darkness remains intact. The score, winner of Broadway's Tony Award, includes such songs as Children Will Listen, Giants in the Sky, and No One Is Alone. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

If you like musical plays, you'll love this great twist on all the classic fairy tales. This Broadway performance entertwines storylines from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and many others for a hilarious and musical performance. A must see.

This is one of my all time favorite musicals, but I hadn't watched this version in 12 years. I watched it with my husband and my 11 year old son, both of whom loved it! My husband, who is not a "musical" type of guy, has even been walking around the house singing some of the songs. If you want a perfect mix of clever, hilarious, family friendly entertainment, rent this movie. It is rather long, so make sure you have enough time to really enjoy it! IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR SMALL CHILDREN, but I would say ages 10 and up or so (depending on maturity) could handle it. I would let the younger ones watch the first act (which is happy ever after) and let the older kids watch the second, which is hilarious but more realistic.

I saw this years ago with a friend, on PBS. It was so stinkin funny. All the classic fairy tales but with enough adult overtones to make it naughtily hilarious! Gets better every time I watch it! Definitely not suitable for children. Not for mine, anyway.
