Kagero-za (1981)

Kagero-za (1981)
Member Rating:
The inner workings of the human psyche are featured in this study of relationships between different leading characters. The action weaves around playwright Matsuzaki (Yusaku Matsuda) -- who is sleeping with Shinako (Michio Okusu), a married woman -- and his other "lover," Ine (Eriko Kasuda), a fairly corporeal spirit. The film is set in 1926, when cinema was silent -- and that era is evoked in Kagero-za. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This was a strange, compelling, repelling, curiousity that we watched all the way through. The cinematic style was very old school and took a bit to get used to. The story was at times confusing but also one where you just HAD to see how it turned out. If you are looking for anything steamy, go elsewhere. There were two odd and in one case physically impossible sequences, but really mild. The subtitles were fairly close most of the time to what the actors were saying, but no always. Also, the run time is wrong. It went much longer than 139 minutes. Closer to 189, though I don't remember precisely. If you are a fan of old school cinema and foreign films, rent it. Otherwise pick another.
