An impoverished young man from Sicily travels to Wolfsburg, West Germany to find work. He takes a job in the Volkswagen factory after he travels through Northern Italy by train. The young man is arrested after he kills two Germans with his knife when they question his honor. I had no idea what I was getting into when I rented this film. It starts out with a fairly straightforward narrative about a young Sicilian leaving his rural village to seek work in Germany but as it progresses it becomes more and more surreal and I realized it's an Art film. I noticed a similarity to Fassbinder's work and the Wikipedia article on the director, Werner Schroeter, confirms that Fassbinder cites him as a personal influence. The article also mentions that he's known for his "stylistic excess" and the film is indeed painfully slow at times but unless the only films you enjoy are the popcorn variety this is a film worth watching and studying.
