I can definitely see what they tried to do with this movie. I love yakuza stories, and I also love Viggo Mortensen's ability to be very badass. So, in that respect, I thought this movie was pretty successful. As far as mob movies go (The Godfather, Casino, Goodfellas, etc) this one takes a unique perspective. I made sure to watch Eastern Promises right after American Yakuza... the best mob-movie-marathon ever!
