A virtual chess match at sea. Very interesting to follow the strategies of both captains. Unlike many WWII movies we see the war from the enemy's perspective as well. Interesting also are the behind the scenes enlisted men's perspectives, the jobs they did, and their various types of equipment they operated. Well done, although the ending was a little cheesy.

As you can imagine for a movie this old, some of the scenes looked a little fake, but that's OK because the storyline is a solid one. The review said this took place in the north Atlantic, but it is really in the south Atlantic, and represents the conflict between two good and honorable men trying to do their duty for their respective countries. It also accurately reflects the "code" between warriors shown in those days--unlike our recent battles versus the North Vietnamese and the Islamic terrorists who are beheading people.

This movie was really very progressive for the time it was made during, At that time the U.S. was just out of the war and negative feelings towards the germans and the japanese were still rampant in the country, And here is a movie that not only showed that hey Germans were people to, But that they were not all a bunch of fantic nazi's. and as expressed in the line by Robert Mitchum " I dont want to get to know and possibly come to like and respect a man I have to destroy" that if there wasnt a war on we could like these guys and even be friends with them. The main battle of this movie is between 2 Good men stuck on opposite sides and the real moral to this movie (expressed by this battle) is that when you left with no choice but to fight their is never a winner, everyone loses. All in all I would say that this is the best war movie made during that period of time, Cap off with incredible acting jobs done by Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens. A deffinate must see for WW2 buffs!!
