Early Summer (1951)

Early Summer (1951)
Member Rating:
Writer/director Yasujiro Ozu combines two of his favorite themes--the culture clashes in modern Japan and the emergence of the independent Japanese woman--in Early Summer (Bakushu). Setsuko Hara plays a young woman of the post-war era who is promised in an arranged marriage. But too much has happened in the world and in the girl's own life to allow her to agree to this union without protest. The characters in Early Summer are neither remote historical personages nor distant foreigners. They are types as easily recognizable in Japan as in any country, and this commonality enhances the universal appeal of this austere film. Yasujiro Ozu collaborated on the script of Early Summer with Kogo Noda. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

What a beautiful film, simply told with wonderful vignettes - a family with one thing on its mind - get the 28-year-old daughter married off...great cast, wonderful humor, just a lovely, lovely film. Takes its time to lovingly and with gentle humor to tell the story of this close-knit average family living in post WWII Japan. We loved it. The extras are also very interesting to listen to while re-viewing the movie. Great insight.

Such a gentle storyteller, and the master of the cinematic gesture...

Director Yasujiro Ozu contributes this very good story about a young woman who is being pressured to marry by her family members. The most entertaining moments come by way of the various discussions and debates over marriage, which are frequently humorous. Setsuko Hara single-handedly carries this movie with her fresh, playful, and wise demeanor. Her interactions with the various family members are very good. This was better than Tokyo Story, IMO.
