Vanished (1994)
This highly-charged Korean political drama launches a direct, hard-hitting assault upon the corruption inherent in the South Korean government with a special focus upon the administration of former President Park Chung Hee. President Park is renamed President Han in this film. Ostensibly the story provides the background for the mysterious disappearance of an exiled politician during a Parisian visit. He was never heard from again. The film begins when a crate containing Park Jin Yook, former head of S. Korea's National Security Agency, arrives to the president's house after being kidnapped. Park is to spend 48 hours in jail which will help him decide not to publish his memoirs that contain an insider's attack of Han's administration. While incarcerated Park remembers the coup he participated in 18-years ago which led Han to office. He then recalls the events and situations. Many of these are based on facts with the names changed to protect the guilty. The film's director is also experienced in these matters as he and his wife were once abducted by the government for political reasons. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
