Scott McGehee and David Siegel's adaptation of Henry James' novel What Maisie Knew stars Julianne Moore as Susanna, a self-involved rock star whose marriage to the equally egotistical Beale (Steve Coogan) is falling apart. They are both less-than-good parents to their six-year-old daughter Maisie (Onata Aprile). Maisie finds some solace in the care of the family's nanny as well as when she's looked after by Susanna's new boyfriend. A modern-day tragedy with a faint light of hope at the end. Interesting that it is based on a Henry James novel, which I now want to read. Onata Aprile as Maisie is the star, and she is phenomenal. It's always a treat to see how a young child can blossom onscreen, here with strong support from Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgard, and Emma Holtzer.
Based on other reviews,I would say there are a lot of folks that like depressing movies.IMO. I hate a movie that after watching I want to find a bus to throw myself under, and this film sure qualifies. It's parents like the two in this film that should NEVER have children!
