The Cassandra Crossing (1976)
Member Rating:
This bizarre entry into the disaster film genre concerns a group of hapless passengers aboard a transcontinental luxury train who are infected with a viral plague by a group of terrorists. Burt Lancaster plays military man Mackenzie, who wants to send the train across a rickety bridge so all the passengers will die, with Mackenzie reasoning the tragedy will give the terrorist movement a bad name. Among the passengers on the train trying to build up antibodies are Jennifer Rispoli Chamberlain (Sophia Loren); Nicole (Ava Gardner), who is embroiled in an affair with a younger man named Robby Navarro (Martin Sheen); and Dr. Jonathan Chamberlain (Richard Harris), a physician who wants to save the passengers but ends up duking it out with the terrorists. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

A pretty good adventure story. Requires some suspension of disbelief. Even in 1977 Cold War Europe, perhaps 150 people would be working on the problem with which this movie deals, not just 3. Not a lot of great acting, but lotsa mounting tension and adventure. "Bizarre" the precis says, OK. Someone on a train has a contagious virus, so what's the big deal. You'll see. Stephen C's review is right on.

Didn't get into this movie--fast-forwarded to a few scenes but it was really boring so I stopped watching it.

If you like the genre you should put this one on your list. It is a mostly forgotten film. How can you not like a railroad movie with a big cast including Sophia Loren. Yes the plot had so many holes in it that you could drive a train through it. The audio was very poor and the music was horrible. O J gets shot and the dog lives. I love these 1970's disaster films made before CGI. I think I will add Airport 75 to my q and watch Karen Black maneuver the 747 over the Rockies.
