This film is an outstanding advance on the earlier Granada Films "The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes", in that the stage direction is superior, the settings and locations are superior, and the music and production values are superior. However, all those excellent qualities pale in comparison to the acerbic Holmes and charismatic Watson that Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke deliver. Both of these actors portray the pinnacle of the Holmesian oevre. Furthermore, John Thaw is also excellent in his own right as the antagonist Small. The film also handles delicately the budding romance between Mary and Dr. Watson that begins in the novel "The Sign of Four". Highly recommended.
