Bakshi's first theatrical attempt at animation plays out rather benign in this movie. If you have seen his version of Lord of the Rings, you might be a bit let down by this movie. With bad voice acting, and primitive animation, it barely manages to grab the viewers attention. I found this film okay in the sense that if you are really into this type of genre, it is considered to be one of the greats. But this is a film to be watched alone, not many will sit through it all the way.

Bakshi IS the Wizard here. This film debuts just weeks before Star Wars and is basically the exact same story - old guy Wizard/Jedi, princess, young guy and helpful anti-hero battle forces of Evil using the "magic" of goodness (and a little cunning). Odd-looking creatures and battle scenes pre-date Rings film (and Star Wars prequels) by 30 years. This one is worth seeing if just to recognize how many films rob from it over the next three decades. More than a little psychedelia and cartoon boobies add to the Bakshi mystique and appeal. A must see. This film is fine for the kids - even recommended - as the war scenes may leave a deep impression upon them about the barbarity of war and hate and the promise of goodwill and peace.

At times great animation but it drags a lot with repetitive use of film manipulated images. The story get long and lost. It's not Fritz the Cat, or Heavy Traffic, or Lord of the Rings. But worth seeing as a history of alternative animation technique.
