Crin Blanc (1952)
Member Rating:
The great African American character actor Frank Silvera was afforded a rare movie starring role in the French short subject The White Mane (Crin Blanc) The title alludes to the film's actual protagonist, a courageous white stallion. Despite repeated attempts, the stallion steadfastly refuses to be captured and broken. There is a delicate fantasy element to the proceedings that might have been shattered had director Albert Lamorisse extended the film beyond its perfect 38 minutes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a beautiful film, but I don't think I would recommend it for kids. It really reflects a 1950's sensibility about human beings and the natural world. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the horse would be more happy tied to a rope at the boys' house than it would be in the cowboys' corral with the rest of the herd. Kids just aren't raised anymore to think about nature or wild animals as objects to possess. My ten-year old and I both found the ending somewhat disturbing.

I watched this with my 10 year old who doesn't like to read. She's also a girl and the story is about a boy, so I wan't sure how much she'd like it. Its in French and she had to read the subtitles, but the movie is almost like a silent movie with the action being expressive of the moment. The pace is so much slower than today's movies, and I think the movie skipped over what would seem like a long period of trust-building between a wild horse and a boy, but I loved the simple lifestyle and honest life values it portrayed for the boy and his family. I liked the ending, it seemed to bring the story around full circle. May daughter gave this movie a 3-1/2 stars.
