What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984)
Member Rating:
Filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, the Luis Buñuel of the 1980s, cooks up another perversely funny descent into urban hell in What Have I Done to Deserve This? Carmen Maura plays a middle-class housewife hemmed in by her wildly eccentric relatives. Her principal purpose in life is a balancing act: to keep her head fastened on securely while all others are losing theirs. Film buffs will have a field day toting up Almodóvar's visual and verbal allusions to the works of Buñuel, Brian De Palma, Billy Wilder, John Waters, and even Andy Warhol. What Have I Done to Deserve This? was originally titled ¿Que He Hecho Yo Para Merecer Esto? ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

You have to love Almodovar! I love the way he re-uses the same actors in his films, like Chus Lampreave who plays the grandmother. I guess when something works you don't change things. The scenic scenes of the city of Madrid are awsome, it's as if you can actually feel the coldness of the city. The tiny apartment this family lives in makes you feel claustrophobic, but in a good cozy way. Although Gloria would love to not have to be in such close quarters with her Husband & much less stingy Mother-in-law. Let's not forget the wardrobes, Oh sooo eighties...love it!

If you're looking for sex, drugs, murder and pure realism. This one's for you. Almodovar at his purest, no holds barred and no apollogies. What do you do when your husband is worthless your children are out of control your Mother in-law lives with you and rescues street vermin as pets, and the stud at work whom you had a crush on can't even get it up? Well for starters you get pepped up on speed kill your husband with a ham-bone and sell your youngest son to Michael Jackson. Well sort of. Give this movie a shot, I'm sure Jhon Waters wished he'd come up with it.

A very funny look at a very dysfunctional family. Mom ends up killing dad, one kid is a drug dealer, the other is the teenage gay lover of a much older doctor, and their neighbor is a happy hooker. Sort of a family sit-com on acid. Some wonderful performances, and even moments real emotion sneaking in here and there. It does start to wear down by the end, and does not add up to a lot (other than being part off the young Almodovar's stick in the eye of the old repressive Spanish order) , but the film is unique and kind of lovable, like its characters.
