1987 was a cheesy time in history, yet this movie seems to transcent time and keep its elegance and cool. Sure, it's not your modern fast-paced blockbuster thriller, but it has character, good dialogue and some interesting twists and turns. Theresa Russel is a looker, but it is Debra Winger who has the acting chops. See it and don't compare. It's a very entertaining rental.

Well done, kept our attention all the way to the great ending with a fine twist. A very entertaining flick, well worth the time to watch

Black Widow is a B movie with A-list actors, made oddly more watchable because of the appeal of Debra Winger. After his update of the classic The Postman Always Rings Twice, director Bob Rafelson once again tries his hand at film noir, this time with a more modern twist, and comes up with very few surprises. The movie goes all glossy when it should have been gritty, creates a homoerotic subtext between the two lead females, and then shies away. Had the film been willing to explore the dynamics of their relationship in more depth, we might have witnessed something special. Instead we get incomplete character development, clunky dialogue, and even some subrate acting, particularly from Theresa Russell. The movie works better as a travelogue, with a hint of 80s nostalgia, than a thriller. This is a sophomoric effort made deceptively palatable by a slick Hollywood veneer.
