Suitors (1988)
Member Rating:
The New York-based The Suitors represented the directorial debut of Iranian Ghasem Ebrahiman. Though they're living in the Big Apple, a group of Iranians cling on to their old, traditional ways. One of their traditions requires the slaughtering of a sheep. This they try to do in the confines of their apartment. Their neighbors assume that the knife-wielding Iranians are terrorists-and in a twinkling, the SWAT teams come roaring into the vicinity. There is some confusion concerning the language in which The Suitors was filmed: some sources claim that the movie was shot in English, while others insist that it was lensed in Farsi. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Although the action is in and around NY, most of the dialogue is in Farsi (Persian/Iranian), so this movie is subtitled. There is some dark comedy here such as the opening terrorism scenes. Essentially this is a tragedy about a young woman from a small village in Iran who wants to see the wider world. However, the Iranian community in NY and her own horizons narrow down and seem to trap her. This film is a gem.
