Filmmaker Bill Guttentag takes a closer look at the atrocities committed by the Japanese after Nanking fell to the Imperial Japanese Army in 1937 with this documentary that was inspired by Iris Chang's novel The Rape of Nanking. Compiled from over 700 hours of footage including news-reel footage, interviews with survivors and soldiers, and staged readings, Nanking was financed in large by millionaire Ted Leonsis, who had read Chang's obituary and subsequently been prompted to read the author's best-selling account of the massacre. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Although this is a documentary, actors read from diaries and journals of the main participants in this horrendous piece of history. I'd guess that lots of people don't know much about the rape of Nanking. I certainly knew very little. This documentary vividly and unsparingly brings to life this terrible chapter in the history of the invasion of Nanking by the Japanese Army in 1937. The atrocities are almost unimaginable. Eye witness accounts by aged survivors of the unspeakable cruelties tell tales that I'll never forget and that I wept to hear. John Rabe, a Nazi, was a sort of Schindler in his defense of the Chinese who he managed to protect in a free zone. Others such as missionaries and medical people were inspiring in their courage. What a great production. Hard to watch but one must bear witness to such events. C Clary Strongsville, Oh

Well put together documentary of the historical events that happened a long time ago during the invasion of Nanking. Definately worth watching.

Excellent documentary of the Japanese invasion of Nanking in the 1930's. The unusual format - having actors read from the diaries of people who were there to witness the events made the film highly engrossing. Original footage added complete authenticity.
