This movie is from 1964, so it now seems quite dated and simplistic. It will appeal primarily to people interested in the early post-colonial period of India. Even though it is in black and white, I enjoyed the scenery and sense of time and place.

An absolutely wonderful film which captures sadness and romance of expatriate life in India (the way some British people loved India so deeply), the love-hate symbiosis of the Raj, and the beginning of the sexual revolution so beautifully. Maybe you have to have experienced life overseas or just have a certain empathy to understand it. An absolute marvel in story-telling.

If you like Felicity Kendall ("Good Life"/"Good Neighbors" from the 70s and "Rosemary and Thyme" currently running....), it is fun to see her when she was just 19 and acting with her own dad (mother too, I think). It is a bit slow in that 'dated' way, but we liked it anyway.
