A woman who lost her husband in a random act of violence and a heroin addict who was a lifelong friend of the dearly departed discover that the beloved husband and friend's unfortunate passing is actually a blessing in disguise in Open Hearts director Susanne Bier's Dogme-style drama. When her husband (David Duchovny) was killed, Audrey Burke (Halle Berry) didn't think she would be able to summon the strength to carry on. Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro) is a heroin addict who was one of the recently deceased's oldest friends in life, but as a result of his addiction Jerry has lost everything that ever mattered to him. When Audrey discovers that Jerry is the one man who could help her move beyond the dire cycle of grieving that she has fallen into, her offer for him to move in with the family provides the addict with just the incentive he needed to finally get his life back in order. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I didnt hate the movie but I didnt like the movie. It' similar to basketball diary's with leonardo dicraprio but b.d. was alot better than this. too many pauses(stare's and moments) in between the movie to try to pull you into how the characters are feeling in that moment. it worked on a few parts but the movie was like that the whole way, there was no payoff, if i can put it in those terms.

i know some people will think this is great but my husband and i couldn't bear to watch another minute of it. the writing was terrible, the delivery stilted and the entire movie just didn't enhance berry, del toro or anyone else in the movie. some movies dealing with depressing topics are so well done you learn from them. this one we learned to shut off. do not rent.

Sublime perfection of a film. The things lost are so many here, though if begins with Berry's character losing her husband played well though very briefly by Duchovny. Del Toro plays her husband's best friend who is a heroin addict - his losses too are many - in general his own life; and together they help one another to attempt recovery from their own tragic lives and to "accept the good" that is offered in a world of so much that is hard or wrong. Great and moving performances (brought me to tears several times) by Halle Berry & Benicio Del Toro and supporting roles as well by Omar Benson Miller, John Carroll Lynch & Alison Lohman. Great cast, great story movie and though a dark film, it's an excellent one.
