3 directors (Italian, Iranian, English) make a short film that takes place on a train. First is the Olmi and my favorite. Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi takes my breath away as always. Movie is poignant and if you are an older person (think Hopkins in The Human Stain), memory, desire and the passage of time are profound issues. The Kiarostami immediately follows and is a journey by a mother and son--dysfunctional relationship at the very least, perhaps abusive is not too strong a word. Dramatic events happen and the mother is in the middle of them all, an enemy-making haridan if ever there was one. Then the Loach--3 Scottish lads going to Rome for a soccer game and their encounter with an immigrant family from Albania. I loved this movie. There are familiar passenger faces throughout. The conductor is active in the second and third film. The immigrant family is almost background in the first, and almost forefront in the third. I was riveted the entire 100 minutes.

I am not sure what the real messsage of this movie was, but after listening to foul mouth teenagers for awhile. This movie coud have been really good but ended up being mediocre due to its exccesive use of bad language esp ath end of the movie. I find it hard to believe that Abbas Kiarostami directed such a boring and dragging movie

A train ride through Europe produces a trio of interrelated stories from a topnotch directing triumvirate. As you might expect from the marquee talent, it is all impeccably done, but a little too placid for me until the final (Loach) segment adds a few sparks.
