Purgatory House (2004)
Member Rating:
Neophyte director/producer Cindy Baer helms the quirky goth afterlife drama Purgatory House, written by the prodigious 14-year-old scenarist Celeste Davis (who also stars). Davis plays Silver Strand, a backward teen who, disgusted with her status as a social pariah and unfulfilled goth hopeful, decides to off herself. She winds up in a purgatory realm that resembles a sketchy juvenile-delinquency home, watched over by Saint James, a caretaker perpetually dressed in a white suit (and played by Tom Hanks' younger brother, Jim Hanks). Once there, Silver must watch the activities of her Earthbound friends on the "Earth TV" network, and is forced to wear the same clothes and makeup over and over again. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The movie is a bit slow at times, and its obviously low-budget. But, it is an interesting story written by a 14 year old. The writer actually stars as "Silver" in the movie. Caught between heaven and hell, this teen committed suicide and must live her days out in purgatory house. I thought it was insightful and put an interesting twist of what happens after suicide.

This indie movie really hits on the voice of teenagers from a teenager. The backgrounds are not bid buget flashy, but they are heartfelt portrayals with the insight of a young teenager wanting to reach out to others with her movie. If you've ever been involved with a low budget indie movie, you can appreciate what this cast and crew has done with their limited budget. Kudos! Plus, watching this movie is supporting up-and-coming indie writers, directors, actors, and crew!

So few adults are able (or even make the attempt) to address teen suicide and suicide attempts. Who better to address this topic than a teen herself. I found this movie intriguing, thought provoking, and quite well done. This is an indie project, written by and starring 14 year old Celeste Davis. Holly6wood should be so daring, thoughtful, etc. Celeste must be an amazing young woman as much as she is also a regular teen. To whom do I recommend this video? Teens, parents, teachers--just about everyone. Bravo, Celeste!!!
