Directed by Takashi Shimizu, The Grudge follows volunteer homecare worker Rika Nishida (Megumi Okina), whose altruism leads her to Chiharu (Yui Ichikawa), a catatonic old woman slowly dying in a home filled with years worth of accumulated filth. Rika's suspicion is aroused when, during the course of her volunteer duties, she can't help but sense an overwhelming feeling of dread. Eventually, Rika opens an old wardrobe only to discover a malevolent boy who introduces himself as Toshio (Yuya Ozeki). It seems as though the house was formerly occupied by a young couple -- Katsuya (Kanji Tsuda), Chiharu's son, and his wife, Kazumi (Risa Matsuda). Sadly, Kazumi was killed thanks to Toshio shortly after moving in, and it wasn't long before Katsuya met a similar fate. When one of Rika's colleagues alerts the local authorities, an investigation turns the house inside out and exposes an ancient and deadly history. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

There are some interesting and frightening moments in this film. The big distraction is the way the film is organized. Every scene begins with the name of the person who is going to die, then predictably tells the story, so there is no real suspense or surprise. As a result, this one turns out to be utterly average, despite a few interesting visuals from the movie trailer.

    Better than the American version.

As far as scary movies go, this one is pretty mediocre. However, coming from an American perspective, it is really interesting to watch the Japanese urban ambiance on this film. As far as the horror genre, I thought that the Japanese version would be better than the American one ... but they are both equally mediocre. I liked the style of this film though. While it is confusing with too many loose ends for an American audience's taste, I enjoyed the female ghost ... she DOES look pretty scary and does not come across as just another clone off of The Ring movie (like the American "The Grudge" did).
