Member Rating:
French filmmaker and playwright Christophe Honoré adapts his own novel for the family drama Close to Léo. In the coastal town of Brittany, twentysomething Léo (Pierre Mignard) lives with his supporting family: mom (Marie Bunel), dad (Dominic Gould), and his three younger brothers. Everyone is shocked to learn the truth when Léo reveals that he's HIV positive. Brothers Tristan (Rodolphe Pauly) and Pierrot (Jérémie Lippmann) are old enough to understand, but everyone agrees little Marcel (Yannis Lespert) shouldn't hear about it. However, Marcel overhears the family's discussion and ends up feeling left out. Léo eventually takes him on a trip to Paris in order to explain his situation. Close to Léo was shown at the 2003 San Francisco Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

How do you tell your youngest child, his older brother has AIDS. In an ideal family which this was, it is very well done and everyone seemed to say the right thing and remembered their blocking. If a bad situation can reach perfection this one did. The "I'm going to take you with me was well done also". If a child is going to learn about AIDS posssily being in their family; I guess this is good as any. The reality of the situation is largely left out. Take my family then you'll have realism. My brother was the youngest and and I was the oldest. Then extract out from there a family of colour and you have some emotions the screen has never seen.

I thought the movie was better than the other reviews. Leo's family is loving and supporting, and the unfolding of the plot is done in typically French good taste. It is a movie about sadness, but it is also a movie about warmth and love.

Great acting from the kid actor, but the ending of the movie left me very disappointed... Like many French movies, the end was NOT uplifting at all... The story is simple, and the characters are explored in depth. Some of the character's reactions are more believable than others. Overall, I liked some elements of this movie (i.e. the relationship b/w family members), but others made me feel uncomfortable (in one scene, the camera slowly moves from the kids feet to his chest, a bit too slow, if you ask me;)... Except for the superb acting by the lead (Marcel, the kid), anything else in this movie is kind of forgettable...
