Japanese Story (2003)
Member Rating:
Following their feature debut, Road to Nhill, in 1997, screenwriter Alison Tilson and director Sue Brooks team up again for the Australian drama Japanese Story. Toni Collette stars as Sandy Edwards, an ambitious geologist who is most comfortable when working alone. She also runs a software design company with a business partner, Bill Baird (Matthew Dyktynski), and she doesn't get along very well with her mother (Lynette Curran). While trying to sell their software products, Bill asks for her help in catching a prospective client. Sandy reluctantly meets the quiet and reserved Japanese businessman Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) in order to make a sale. After he requests that she take him on a driving tour, the odd couple find themselves stranded in the Pilbara desert for a night -- one of the most remote places in the Australian outback. During this time together, their relationship quickly escalates and both parties are changed by the experience. Japanese Story premiered at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Strangley wonderful film. Strangers from different worlds, meet, spend time together and become friends of a sort. Heart wrenching.

I loved this movie. Toni Colette does a fabulous acting job playing - I've follwed her work since Muriel's Wedding. A beautiful story about two people who are each a bit lost, how they come together only to be changed forever. I love how Toni wants to be involved in the arrangments towards the end. The photos found and letter shared really made me cry - a beautiful movie in my opinion.

Toni Collette seems to have won every acting award offered in Australia for this film, and deservedly so. How is it that I'd never heard of it until a friend recommended it to me? This is a quiet, thoughtful, romantic, erotic and ultimately a very intimate film. It's not about the plot so much as it is about the characters. It is also incredibly cinematic. The film is full of surprises; just when you think you know where it's going it makes a sharp turn. This is frustrating, because I feel like my words are not doing justice to this little jewel. Not for those seeking heart-pounding action or standard Hollywood romantic fare. And I too like those films when they are done well. But this film trancends easy categorization. It blew me away.
