A Perfect Spy (1988)
Member Rating:
This spy outing hones in on secret agent Magnus Pym (Peter Egan). Having impersonated so many different people during his career as a British spy, Pym eventually lost track of who he really was -- a confusion compounded by the fact that he knew nothing of his actual past. Ultimately feeling that he could trust no one -- not even his so-called friends -- Pym turned his back on the British and began trading secrets with the Enemy. Filmed on location in England, Europe, and the U.S., the seven-episode A Perfect Spy originally aired in the U.K. in 1988. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This was not my favorite LeCarre story. In spite of superb acting, the movie featured so much of Pym's father, I was beginning to wonder when it would get to the point. My opinion is likely clouded by a somewhat misleading description. Perhaps the screenplay distorted LeCarre's intent.

Perhaps, since we could not bring ourselves to view more than 4 of the 7 episodes, we cannot comment on the whole series, but we found ourselves bored with the slow pace and the almost unintelligible English accents and colloquialisms. We agree that the borish father should have bowed out much earlier. We've stuck it out with slow movies before in the hope of it picking up and ending well, but another three hours was not worth the gamble. Not our cup of tea 'old chap'.
