Steambath (1973)
Member Rating:
Bruce Jay Friedman's acclaimed off-Broadway play, which offers a decidedly unusual perspective on the afterlife, is brought to the screen in this production originally created for public television. Tandy (Bill Bixby) is a New York Police Department employee who suddenly and unexpectedly finds himself enjoying a steam at a public bathhouse overseen by an elderly Hispanic gentleman, Morty (Jose Perez). As the evening wears on, Tandy and Morty are joined by several other guests -- a stock trader (Kenneth Mars), a cabbie (Stephen Elliott), an attractive woman (Valerie Perrine), and a schlubby nebbish (Herb Edelman) -- and it begins to dawn on Tandy and his companions that they've all recently died, and that the steam bath is actually the waiting room to the next life, where Morty is judging their fates. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Like others, I saw this when it aired in 1973. The interesting story stayed in my mind and gave me a new appreciation for the acting ability of Bill Bixby. I'm glad to see it again.

I was lucky to catch this on PBS by chance in 1973, the only time that it aired (that I am aware of). Very risque for the times because of language and nudity, it stars Bill Bixby, Valerie Perrine and Jose Perez. I do not wish to give away the plot, though others may when they write a review. It is worth watching. One hint: Did you know that God is Puerto Rican? Enjoy.

Bill Bixby and Valerie Perrine are wonderful. The plot is to wierd - experimental for most people. Valerie's nude scene is about all that most viewers will enjoy. It tries to be an intellectual play but the "twist" is obvious very quickly and the philisophical discussions are too shallow for my taste. It may have been impressive back in 1973 but not by today's standards.
