Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov broke boundaries with his dreamlike vision of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russian Ark. It's the first feature-length narrative film shot in a single take (on digital video, using a specially designed disc instead of tape). Russian Ark is shot from the point-of-view of an unseen narrator, as he explores the museum and travels through Russian history. The audience sees through his eyes as he witnesses Peter the Great (Maksim Sergeyev) abusing one of his generals; Catherine the Great (Maria Kuznetsova) desperately searching for a bathroom; and, in the grand finale, the sumptuous Great Royal Ball of 1913. The narrator is eventually joined by a sarcastic and eccentric 19th century French Marquis (Sergey Dreiden), who travels with him throughout the huge grounds, encountering various historical figures and viewing the legendary artworks on display. While the narrator only interacts with the Marquis (he seems to be invisible to all the other inhabitants), the Marquis occasionally interacts with visitors and former residents of the museum. The film was obviously shot in one day, but the cast and crew rehearsed for months to time their movements precisely with the flow of the camera while capturing the complex narrative, with elaborate costumes from different periods, and several trips out to the exterior of the museum. Tilman Büttner, the director of photography, was responsible for capturing it all in one single Steadicam shot. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

The fact that they actually pulled off a 90 minute shot (with so many extras and such a long route to light) is extremely impressive. As well, the costumes were wonderful and the set was of course beautiful. All that aside, this movie is also exremely dull and left me wishing it was over halfway through. I think that the message of the film was compromised by the lack of action. The brief appearances of historical figures was not interesting (perhaps if I were Russian it would be different but I doubt it). The dreamlike quality of the entire film is a little fascinating in parts, but it doesn't hold up consistently for me. I can't help thinking that if there was a solid plot (which can still have the dreamlike quality) the movie would have been absolutely wonderful. Perhaps a plot would have made the 90 minute shot impossible though, since the less complicated action would be easier to film. 2 1/2 stars for the technical aspect, and zero for the entertainment factor.

Okay, what a spectacular achievement to shoot the entire movie in a single continuous shot. But since that is this movie's only achievement, don't waste your time with this one. No plot, no point, almost as much fun as walking through an art museum.

As most would agree, the costumes and glimpses of the opulent salons in the palace are excellent. However, there is very little here of Russian history other than the appearance of a few Russian royals here and there. The notion of the diplomat and the unseen narrator walking through the palace and having a bit of contact with some of these characters, most of whom we have no idea about, seemed quite trite and a bit silly. I think a simple straightforward tour of the palace would have been far more interesting and informative. The attempt to turn this into some sort of artistic interpretation of a walk through the palace at different times in history with some etherial characters fails in my estimation.
