South Korean filmmaker Park Cheol-kwan makes his feature film debut with Darmaya Nolja (Hi, Dharma!), an action comedy drama about a group of Jopok gangsters hiding out with Buddhist monks. Criminal leader Jae-gyu (Park Shin-yang) and his fellow tough guys seek shelter in an out-of-the way monastery. The monks and the gangsters spend their time competing in various contests and learning a little bit about each other. Hi, Dharma! is one of the many Korean Jopok films released in 2001, along with Kick the Moon, Friend, and My Wife Is a Gangster. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Wonderful situation comedy of gangsters vs buddhist monks. Lessons to be learned about compassion, having fun and what separates the criminal from the divine. A fine Korean film suitable for all ages and a great introduction into another cultures movie making set with their own cultural heritages.

From what my mother told me, this was a hit in South Korea. I found the story easy to follow, and although I classify this movie as a drama, there were some scenes that was extremely funny as well as some action. I found my distaste for the characters to change by the end of the movie. I did crave for more action, but the movie as it stands is enjoyable.
