Kandahar (2001)
Member Rating:
Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf examines the troubling story of life in neighboring Afghanistan in this compelling drama. Nafas (Niloufar Pazira) is a reporter who was born in Afghanistan, but fled with her family to Canada as a child, escaping the violence of the country's political instability. However, her sister wasn't so lucky; she lost her legs to a land mine while young, and when Nafas and her family left the country, her sister was accidentally left behind. Nafas receives a letter from her sister announcing that she's decided to kill herself during the final eclipse before the dawn of the 21st century; desperate to spare her sister's life, Nafas makes haste to Afghanistan, where she joins a caravan of refugees who, for a variety of reasons, are returning to the war-torn nation. As Nafas searches for her sister, she soon gets a clear and disturbing portrait of the toll the Taliban regime has taken upon its people. Also featuring Hassan Tantai and Sadou Teymouri, Safar E Gandehar was shown in competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

All of the interrelated issues that "Kandahar" explores (e.g., education, famine, landmines, militancy and ideology, and women's rights) are presented from a humanitarian, rather than political, and from an insider, rather than outsider, perspective. Based on true events, every beautifully filmed scene contains an eye-opening moment regarding the plight of Afghan refugees living under Taliban rule along the Iran/Afghanistan border. And even though the dialogue is unscripted and not one of the enormously talented actors is a professional, nothing about "Kandahar" is the least amateurish. With a strong, linear plot, it is simply one of the most astonishing and best-directed films I've seen all year, and a must-see for anyone who is only vaguely aware of what is going on "over there". The bonus commentary is also very much worth a watch for both a historical and personal accounting of Afghan life since the 1950s.

I have had this movie in my queue for over a year I think and it's status is still "very long wait". I'm not sure why Blockbuster just doesn't admit that they don't have the movie. If the wait is so long, would it kill them to buy a couple more DVDs? Sheesh!

Interesting movie if you like to learn about other countries and the day to day activites. Its a good portral of a womans quest to find her sister in afganistan. While it was a little slow at times, worth watching... Cant help but wonder how accurate. If its true, no woman would willingly stay IF they had a choice... I guess that the real point of the movie. Conditions are really bad in some countries and most dont realize it.
