The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975)
Member Rating:
The Apple Dumpling Gang stars Bill Bixby as Russell Donovan, a slick frontier gambler. In Runyon-esque fashion, he is compelled to look after three precocious oprhaned kids. He can't handle the responsibilities alone, so he agrees to an in-name-only marriage to hoydenish stagecoach driver, Magnolia Dusty Clydesdale (Susan Clark). Fortuitously, they discover that a mine belonging to the kids' late father is worth millions. This brings several disreputable characters into the storyline: bumbling "nice" bandits Theodore Ogelvie and Amos (Don Knotts and Tim Conway), and deadly "bad" bandits headed by Frank Stillwell (Slim Pickens). Based on a novel by Jack M. Bickham, The Apple Dumpling Gang was successful enough to spawn a sequel-not to mention several future screen teamings for Don Knotts and Tim Conway. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a classic, MUST SEE, for all you 40-50 somethings. The humor is clean and family friendly. Don Knotts and Tim Conway are hysterical in every movie they star in. If you like this, don't forget the sequal, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again. If that isn't enough, watch my favorite Don Knotts and Tim Conway movie, The Private Eyes. These will have you laughing the whole way through.

It really is too bad they don't make them like this anymore. The humor is great, the romance is sincere, and the affection for the children just keeps growing. The kids were all great little troopers. Their acting is genuine, just like if you filmed your own kids. Tim Conway and Don Knotts are hilarious together. There are probably only one or two things young kids would ask about that might make parents uncomfy. The Apple Dumpling Gang is everything Disney taught us movies should be. It's movies like this that led us to trust the company to this day. Oh, fans of the movie will like the bonus features. There are interviews with the cast, including a chat with Tim Conway. The commentary is confusing, because it includes most of the actors, but they weren't together when they recorded it.

If you like Don Kotts or Tim Conway you will enjoy this movie. Very tame humor that is great for kids and adults alike, this is one for the whole family or classroom.
