Heartland (1980)
Member Rating:
The "heartland" of the title is rural Wyoming in the early 20th century, where dwells taciturn, reclusive Scottish farmer Rip Torn. Conchata Ferrell arrives at the Torn spread to work as his housekeeper. Paid near-starvation wages, Ferrell continues working day and night, hoping to use her savings to ensure a bright future for her 10-year-old daughter Megan Folsom. Touched by her diligence, Torn slowly falls in love with Ferrell, and after seeing the woman and her child through the torturous Wyoming winter, he marries her - but their union gets off to a shaky start and threatens to buckle, thanks to several unforeseen casualties. Heartland is based on several autobiographical works by Elinore Randall Stewart. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you're expecting, mystery, action, horror, suspense, sex or foul language, then this is not the movie for you. It is just a nicely told well acted story about life in the pioneer days. I enjoyed it very much. I recommend it for family viewing.

It is not an "O'Pioneers" or "Sarah, Plain and Tall" but still a pretty good story. It didn't give you a very good feeling about homesteading in the cold Wyoming plains for sure. Basically the entire story is about how horrible life was homesteading then.

Heartland is filled with interesting and believable details of pioneer life. It takes an almost documentary approach when portraying marriage and ranching; a difficult calf birth is shown in clinical detail. The characters are appealing, but stoic and pragmatic. The National Endowment for the Arts provided funding for Heartland and it has a PBS/NPR feel to it. It's never stupid, poorly written or manipulative, but it's very low-key. This is also more of an episodic story than a normal movie tale of a conflict and it's resolution. Despite the PG rating, most kids would find this movie both too quiet and too gross. I liked it.
