Fear Strikes Out (1957)
Member Rating:
Anthony Perkins stars as troubled baseball great Jimmy Piersall in Fear Strikes Out. Based on Piersall's shattering tell-all autobiography, the film traces Jimmy's ascent from the sandlots of Waterbury, CT, to the Boston Red Sox, with his domineering father (Karl Malden) pushing the boy beyond all reasonable limits. Unable to withstand the pressure, Piersall suffers a nervous breakdown and is confined to a mental institution. Through a long period of therapy, Jimmy realizes that he has excelled in baseball not for his own gratification but to please his father. This film was preceded by a 1956 TV version starring Tab Hunter. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Fear strikes out is a great story about great ball player who was just pushed to hard by his father, this is about when good is not enough, Anthony Perkins as the baseball great plays his part with real feeling of what Jimmy Piersall went though, He has you feel the fear. Larry / Hawaii

Never knew the story about Jimmy Piersall so was a great educational movie for someone who loves baseball history. Anthony Perkins is indeed great in his role of Piersall and Karl Madden is very convincing.

I remembered seeing this as a kid and enjoying it but unfortunately as an adult I found it boring and the only ones who could act were Tony Perkins and Karl Malden
