Wim Wenders revisits his masterpiece Der Himmel Uber Berlin in this film which picks up several years after the original left off. Cassiel (Otto Sander) is an angel who watches over the lives of the people of recently reunified Berlin with Raphaella (Nastassja Kinski). Damiel (Bruno Ganz), Cassiel's former partner who opted to return to the land of the living in the first film, now lives happily as a pizza chef with the woman he loved and married, circus performer Marion (Solveig Dommartin). While angels are forbidden to directly intervene in the lives of humans, Cassiel impulsively breaks this rule when a little girl falls from the balcony of an apartment block, and he swoops down to catch her. Suddenly made flesh and blood, Cassiel has earned the enmity of Emit Flesti (Willem Dafoe), a sort of overseer of the angels on the physical plane. Emit makes it his business to make things difficult for Cassiel now that he's living among the humans, and after a period of alcoholism and imprisonment, Cassiel finds himself working for gangster Tony Baker (Horst Buchholz), who distributes weapons and pornography on the black market. However, Cassiel has a change of heart and decides to destroy Tony's stockpile in a bid to make the world a better place. Peter Falk, who played himself in Der Himmel Uber Berlin, makes a return appearance when a gallery shows the sketches that he was making in the first film; rock singer Lou Reed and former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev also appear as themselves. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Wings of Desire was a masterpiece. This sequel was not even close. Good ideas but the actors that don't speak English (you can tell) deliver weak performances. See Wings and Desire and forget this one because it will just ruin the memory of the great characters in the original.

I was diapointed because in the describtion it doesn't say non-english speaking and with peter falk I Though it would be. It was english in trailer. It was kind of interesting to watch without subtitles even though I don't usually watch non- english speaking movies and I kind of got the feeling Peter Falk wondered onto the wrong movie set by mistake.

I loved this movie but to put it in perspective Wings of Desire was my all time favorite. I am always disappointed when I see sequels that fizzle next to the original. In this case, I was pleasantly surprised as I always wondered how Wenders would go if he ever did another movie. I actually like this better than Wings of Desire. You can see the spiritual transformation in Wenders in this movie. And while there was always some kind of darkness and uncertainty to Wings of Desire that made it haunting and unforgettable Far Away, So Close is no longer in the spiritual holding pattern that Wings of Desire left one in. This movie distinguishes the spiritual lines that we all experience whether we know it or not. I love the new characters in this movie. Wim Wenders has an amazing ability to give you a movie that leaves an imprint on your heart and mind that is memorable and unforgettable. I know that I will be thinking about this movie for a long time.
