The shortest of Disney's major animated features Dumbo involves a baby elephant with unusually large ears. Ostracized from the rest of the circus animals, poor Dumbo is even separated from his mother, who is chained up in a separate cage after trying to defend her child. Only brash-but-lovable Timothy Mouse offers the hand of friendship to Dumbo, encouraging the pouty pachyderm to exploit his "different" qualities for fame and fortune. After trepidatiously indulging in a vat of booze, Dumbo awakens in a tall tree. Goaded by a group of jive-talking crows, Dumbo discovers that his outsized ears have given him the ability to fly. The musical score by Frank Churchill and Oliver Wallace won Oscars for them both. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
I'll agree that its not my favorite Disney movie, but it is a wonderful Disney classic and a MUST-SEE for any Disney fan. We rented it for our kids as we are preparing to go to Disney World in May and we want them to know the stories behind the rides.
I find it crazy how in 1941 a kid's movie had racism and alcohol use and no one would think anything of it. But I find this movie very strange with that scene that Dumbo gets drunk and sees pink elephants.
There are sweet part that my 2.5 year old daughter enjoys, but there are the typical old disney style of fighting, crashing that she doesn't like. My daughter kept on asking me where is the "Mommy elephant" and broke into tears.
The magic of Disney is firmly in place with this release. Definitely a Disney classic. No acid trip could top Dumbos dream sequence after accidentally drinking Champaign. The whole movie is a delight for young and old.
Not one of my favorite Disney animated movies - too be sure ! The best part of this movie are the Black Crows singing, "When I see an elephant fly." Pretty trippy "drunk-scene", too ! The prelude to the 1960's LSD flashbacks !
I never liked this movie even as a child. I really hated the acid trip section of the movie when Dumbo gets knocked out, creeped me out. Parents there really are better Disney movies out there than this one, with better scores and animation.
