Great special effects do not always make for a great film, but Dreamscape comes awfully close. Dr. Paul Novotny (Max Von Sydow) and Dr. Jane Devries (Kate Capshaw) run a clinic for the study of dreams. Hoping to alleviate the pain of those plagued with recurring nightmares, Novotny hires a team of psychics to "inhabit" the subconsciouses of the patients. Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid), a small-time hustler who uses his ESP gifts for financial gains, is hired to work at the clinic. He helps to disperse the fears of a young nightmare-plagued boy, then reverts to type by "raping" the thoughts of the lovely Dr. Devries. Things come to a head when one of the patients, the American president (Eddie Albert), decides to purge himself of his apocalyptic dreams by making a lasting peace with the Soviets. Bob Blair (Christopher Plummer), the political reactionary who finances the clinic, decides to assassinate the president by acting upon Dr. Novotny's pet theory: if a person dies in his or her dream, he/she will die in real life. The finale pits Gardner against psychic assassin Tommy Ray Glatman (David Patrick Kelly). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

For those of us who like a thinking film more than graphics...this is a great combo. It comes from the era when paranormal (when TV series such as 'The 6th Sense', 'Twight Zone', 'Tales from the Darkside', and 'Night Gallery' were big) was on everybody's lips, from The Exorcist to Brainstorm. Dreamscape has a humorous twist to it's SciFi horror plot, with a secondary love/lust story played between Kate Capshaw and Dennis Quaid. Ed and I have often wished we could view one anothers dreams, but alas! this IS probably what the gov would do with it if any of us could :(

This was one of those movies that I saw as a kid.Back then the speacial effects incredible.Looking back at it they aren't that great according to today's standards. The plot on the other hand is well done.If anything check this movie out just for the well perfomance from Dennis Quaid.

The first time I saw this movie was 20 years ago, as a child, and it was scary. Watching it now, it seems cheesy. But the plot was still suspenseful and interesting.

Wonderful plot idea, some interesting special effects even given that there have been many advancements in such things since the film was released, but there are some aspects about the "love" relationship that seem pretty forced and some some of the peak moments suffer from cheesy dialogue that detracts from an otherwise interesting film.

Classic "80's" movie. I grew up in the 80's so I thought it was OK. I always like the "steven king" ideas for a plot but what passed for good acting back in the 80s looks pretty shallow today. OK for the kids on a rainy day.

Pretty good fantasy thriller that plays like a sci fi Nightmare on Elm Street. The vintage special effects are also fun to watch.

Loved this movie when I saw it as a kid. Having recently seen Inception, I wanted to revisit it. Big mistake. First, painful to watch special effects. Yes, I understand it's been 25 years but still painful. Second, I didn't remember how silly the whole thing is. It's a strange mixture of serious sci-fi, horror, and silliness. Didn't translate well to me. As my wife said, it's best to leave your good memories in the past!
