The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)
Member Rating:
Peter Greenaway's first fiction feature (after the mock-documentary The Falls) made him immediately famous and was named one of the most original films of the 1980s by British critics. The action is set in the director's beloved 17th century. Ambitious young artist Mr. Neville (Anthony Higgins) is invited by Mrs. Herbert (Janet Suzman) to make 12 elaborate sketches of her estate. Besides money, the contract includes sexual favors that Mrs. Herbert will offer to the draughtsman in the absence of Mr. Herbert. Entirely confident in his ability to weave a web of intrigues, Mr. Neville eventually becomes a victim of someone else's elaborate scheme. The film is structured as a sophisticated intellectual puzzle like the ones popular in the 17th century. There is a lot to pay attention to besides the intrigues -- fancy wigs, conversations by candlelight, English parks, Purcell-inspired baroque music by Michael Nyman, all to please the eyes, soothe the ears, and stimulate the mind. ~ Yuri German, Rovi

The Draughtsman's Contract is a strange movie, even for those of us who like English "period pieces". The story is very convoluted, not that credible, and the director's style very unconventional. I can't say that I recommend it, but neither was it a complete waste of time either. Judge for yourself.

The movie makers really pulled a fast one with this loser. The only saving grace was the scenery and costumes.-No plot-no acting-no directing.

The wooden acting and stilted dialogue make the Libertine look like Citizen Kane by comparison. I'm predisposed to like period pieces, but this was borderline unwatchable.

Ghastly. It was apparently rife with symbolism that I'm too unsophistocated to understand.

Strange Math: The Draughtsman's Contract: how do they report a 4 star Average Rating when the four member reviews are as follows: one half, one, one and a half and two? Doesn't average out to four stars, even for this A&M grad...

PRETTY TO LOOK AT AND VERY PRENTENTIOUS BUT, UNLESS IT'S ANOTHER REMINDER THAT THE POWERFUL SOMETIMES COVER THEIR CRIMES ON THE BACKS OF THEIR UNDERLINGS, I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE MESSAGE IS. NOT ALL OF MY CHOICES ARE A SUCCESS.

Terrible. Hard to imagine how it could be rated 4 stars. Both boring and annoying.
