Dona Herlinda and Her Son (1986)
Member Rating:
In this sly Mexican sex comedy, a manipulative mama deftly manages the life of her homosexual son so that he can have his cake and eat it too. A woman of means, she does this by allowing her son, a doctor, to tryst in her home with his lover. Putting her son's happiness above all else, she then arranges a marriage of convenience to a woman. When the marriage is consummated, the young male lover gets terribly jealous and this creates problems until the irrepressible Doña Herlinda again gets involved. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Very cute story about a mother getting what she wanted and what her son needed in '80s Mexico. Production quality and sound poor, subtitles that go by so fast you can't read them, but still worth 90 minutes.

I hate panning a movie! But I have to weigh in with the previous comments about the subtitles. I only saw at most the first 20 minutes. There was on scene I replayed three times and still could not read the subtitle. A problem with the DVD itself, not related direction/acting/story kept me from seeing the whole movie - it would not play at all on a regular DVD player, skipped on two PC DVD drives and an stopped on an X-Box 360). The 20 minutes I watched just did not catch me enough for me to ask for another copy, and I am sure the subtitles were central to this!!

I liked this movie more for all that was in it outside of the bad acting & storyline... It's a shame Arturo Meza didn't at least try to make another film (the younger hunky lead). If you want a good reference of what life in Guadalajara in the mid 80's was like, this would give you a good picture for research. As a case study for hidden homosexuality within the strict religious Catholic community, this would also suffice. Who could believe that Dona wouldn't know her son was banging his roommate? She's either incredibly naive or on medications.

This movie was horrible. The subtitles scroll too fast and your just left there listening to spanish. UGH!!! I should have took a hint from teh other reviews....

The movie is very dated. BUT for it's time, and considering that it was made in a conservative Catholic country, I thought it was rather progressive. It is filmed in 16mm, 4:3. Very poor sound quality, and the subtitles sometimes wiz by so fast they are impossible to read. I watched the whole movie, and the ending was well ... much like the beginning, rather pointless. The redeeming qualities? Very cute young lead, in period attire! Wow, how I miss short shorts and tight pants! Not a keeper. I will never view it again.

Poor quality film. Subtitles would leave much to be desired for anyone who does not understand Spanish. Even understanding Spanish tI ask myself why I even finished watching the movie. The story plot was plain stupid and with the exeception of a couple of seconds of shots in the sauna and on the bed certainly not worth wasting time on.

I should have switched off this movie after the first 20 minutes. By the end, it was clear that nothing interesting happened. And the ending wasn't even conclusive. Unless you're a fan of Mexican high society, leave this flick alone.
