Based on the book Matilda, by British children's author Roald Dahl, this film moves the setting from the U.K. to the U.S.; otherwise it follows the original closely. Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) is an extremely curious and intelligent little girl who is very different from her low-brow, mainstream parents (Danny DeVito and real-life wife Rhea Perlman), who quite cruelly ignore her. As she grows older, she begins to discover that she has telekinetic powers. Not until a teacher shows her kindness for the first time does she realize that she can use those powers to do something about her sufferings and help her friends as well. Villains from the awful Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), headmistress of her miserable school Crunchem Hall, to her parents and older brother begin to feel her ire. Look for Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman) in a small part as an FBI agent investigating Matilda's shady father. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Great movie, and for those who like to actually read the things, pretty close to the book in most things.

My 8 and 5 year old girls did NOT laugh once. Myhusband and i found it disturbing and in bad taste. We did not finish watching it. My 5 year old who watches Spiderman and all his terrors woke up with nightmares from this movie! not recommended for kids

I don't get it. There were some great reviews about this but my family couldn't get past the first 30 minutes. The Wormwoods call Matilda an "accident" and they neglect her, belittle her, try to teach her to lie, cheat and steal in their business. They are terrible parents. It also shows school as a scary place and the principal tortures children in a torture chamber type closet. We kept waiting for something good to happen or something to redeem this movie or give us hope and couldn't wait any longer so we stopped the movie. Maybe there is a happy ending but I didn't want my son to be exposed to all the trash that comes before the end. This is not a children's movie.
