After he is framed for the death of several colleagues and falsely branded a traitor, a secret agent embarks on a daring scheme to clear his name in this spy adventure. Though it drew its name from the familiar television series, director Brian DePalma's big-budget adaptation shares little more with the original show than the occasional self-destructing message and the name of team leader Jim Phelps (Jon Voight). The film focuses not on Phelps but his protégé, Ethan Hunt (a reserved Tom Cruise), who becomes a fugitive after taking the blame for a botched operation. He responds by banding together with a group of fellow renegades, and he is soon maneuvering his way through a twisted series of double crosses that mainly serve as excuses for spectacular high-tech action sequences. Much of the activity revolves around a missing computer disk, with the film's most famous scene depicting Hunt's delicate efforts to retrieve the disk from a secure, well-alarmed room in CIA headquarters. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide
Mission Impossible 1 is one of my all time favorites. Don't read the synopsis if you haven't already-it gives too much away. This movie combines Hitchcock suspense and paranoia with slam bang action sequences and features one of the best plots you'll ever find in a summber blockbuster. Mission Impossible 1 is A plus, 5 star entertainment. In my humble opinion this first Mission Impossible movie is a thousand times better than MI 2.
This movie is as thrilling as the series with the action, disguises, twists and turns. However it started a trend that continued even into the remake of "The Green Hornet" and that is taking a good guy from the series and turning them into a evil bad guy in the movies.
This was my first time seeing this movie, and although it was good, it wasn't the best. I don't know if I didn't like it all that much b/c it just seemed old or it just isn't that good. I meant the plot was good, but I felt bored at times. The technology was an eye sore! I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the moives though!
This film has a lot of nostalgic value for me. I just recently viewed again and I have to say this is still a great movie 'till this day. I'll admit the story is a little too crazy to be completely believable, but it's not too far fetched. I consider the first Mission Impossible to be a sophisticated James Bond movie. The films lead Tom Cruise was at the top of his game for this one. The film also has a great supporting cast that really get's the job done. This movie is tense, action packed, and thoroughly entertaining. I highly recommend it! 9/10
